Script: It's adapted of McCarthy's the title novel. The most important characters are:
(1) Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem): At first, I should mention to brilliant acting of Javier Bardem. When I saw his first scenes I was confident that he was the best bet for Oscar award! Anyway, he plays a pscycho-path sinister murderer who get used to kill people. His lethal weapon is a tank of compressed oxigen. His expressions in murdering is astonishing! It seems he's killing a cockroach! He kills people for some reasons: to release himself, to steal a car, to gain $2 millions and he murders everyone who hinders him. In a brilliant scene, he presents a haphazard way to decide to murder a guy. He asked the salesclerk of a service station to choose one side of the coin which he flipped some seconds ago. He chooses the right side and survives! Also, in some scenes we perceive he's an intelligent murderer with high degree of tolerance of predicaments. So, his final scenes make sense! No one can catch him even if he's injured severely!
(2) Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin): A poor, married man living in a house trailer. In his first scene, he seems a terrible hunter. He cannot hunt a deer. After that dud exprience, he comes to the place of a fatal went-wrong drug deal. In his search, he finds $2 millions! Is he a fortunate guy? No, indeed! Because Chigurh is after the money, too!
(3) Sherrif Bell (Tommy Lee Jones): An old sherrif who wants to save Llewelyn and put an end to Anton's bloody adventure.
* MAC GUFFIN- A term which coined by Alfred Hitchcock. It`s an object, event or character serving to set and keep the plot in motion. In "NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN" there's an object ($2 millions) which brings forth the main dramatic action and gives motivations to the major character. That's the story's Mac-Guffin.
* Showdown and Realization: The showdown of the movie is a certain discrepency between it and other "Cat chases mouse" type films. The realization of it leaves a deep impression on audiences: The homicidial maniac gets away with murders!
Directing: Coen Brothers' way of directing in the movie is fascinating. Scenes come one after another in the most fluent and delicate way. There's no pulse in the rythm of the movie. The scenes consisted of deliberate shots. It's obvious that Coen brothers thought of every shot alot. Therefore, the film becomes a specific slice of life in details. Finally, Coen Brothers' masterpiece is a 120 minutes directing course.
P.S. Buy the movie and watch it. You`ll take delight in watching it!
